The Narrow Road to the Interior

is a series of 60 scrolls in encaustic monotype on kitakata paper. Each one is 16” x 39.” Most of them can be viewed singly or in groups (not necessarily in the groupings seen below - the ordering can be quite plastic). There are a few dipytchs. They've taken me on a exploration across the entire R&F Paint color chart, where I used every single color by the end of this series.  The inks here (often a mixture of sumi and walnut inks) are applied with invasive plant material as brushes that deconstruct and destabilize as I use them, so there are always these unpredictable occurrences in the marks.  Both iterative and modular, they keep combining into new views.  The travel without travel.

From my notes at the time: “I got stuck in the pinks like a lenticular cloud gets stuck on a mountain, and am almost out of walnut ink, two liters in two years.  Time to make a new batch…”
